Yes, I tan myself for Katara, and a few of my other costumes. No, it is not black-face. It is done with NO racist intentions or any "imitation" of a race (Water Tribe isn't a race). The makeup I use is a natural tan color that I could (and have, darker actually) naturally reach if I spent any time outside.
It is not "putting on and taking off a race".
I simply tan myself in order to make my skin tone MORE SIMILAR to my favorite character I absolutely love. I find it RESPECTFUL to the character to not white wash her. No, I'm not going to choose another character if that one is my favorite. I don't see her for her skin tone, I see her for what an amazing personality she has and the similarities I share with her.
Do not harass me and call me racist. I will not be nice to you in response. I am not going to stop cosplaying my favorite characters the way I think is more respectful to portray them because you are hyper-sensitive to the subject. I have done nothing wrong, and you're wasting your time, so I'd suggest you just move along.
If you find this offensive or insulting, don't look at it. Don't look at my photos. I do not take them to offend people, and I do not take them for you. I'm sorry if it offends you, but I'm not going to change my opinion and I'm not going to stop tanning myself to do my characters more justice.
Do not reply to this if you are going to attempt to "prove me wrong", I will just delete your comments, because I am done dealing with this.
EDIT: Do not message me, I will no longer entertain your opinions on this topic. I do not need the negativity on my DA or in my inbox so it will be deleted or flagged as spam. No, that's not cowardly, that's keeping your negativity off of my page. I entertained this for long enough.
EDIT 2: Thanks to whoever gave me the premium membership!! yayyy!
I'm just now stumbling upon this and I want to say thank you so much for writing it! I've seen a lot of drama about this recently and it really makes me frustrated, especially since I tan for a dark skinned character as well. It irritates me because most of these characters are not even written to be a certain race, they're just dark skinned and people write off any possibility that they could also be a tanned light skinned character. I mean who's to really say for sure? It's frustrating because when it comes down to it, you're either whitewashing or brownfacing so what these self proclaimed SJA's are really trying to do, is they're trying to tell us to only cosplay our own race. and THAT is wrong.
Thanks. I completely agree with you. They're fictional characters without a real race most of the time. White people are allowed to tan, and a lot of white people can get very dark (myself included). Who is to even say what race is any more and what the limits of each race is? Most of us are not purebred anything!
I think they will eventually stop, and that this fad will become old news and nobody will care any more. Don't let them stop how you cosplay, because we both know (and it's obvious), you aren't doing anything racist. These are a bunch of teenagers and young 20 year olds that have nothing better to do with their time. They have no idea what makes something actually brownface, and they apparently want to call attention to and create "racism". They think the answer to white privilege is to literally become racist against white people and treat them like crap, acting like we owe them something. Meanwhile those of us they are attacking have never been racist to start with.
My opinion is to not poke a sleeping dragon in the eye. There's no point picking a fight against someone that's not doing something wrong because you're only inviting a fight and creating a problem when there was none.
The way to erase racism is to stop talking about it.
i don't see how it any different then painting your self green for She-hulk or to paint your self orange for starfire or any other characters. You dont see people getting hurrased by aliens for colouring them selfs green, and I cant tan to save my life so a little bronzer or make-up to alter your skin tone.
When did cosplaying get into the realm of being "politically correct"? Where'd the fun, ingenuity and creativity go? Any cosplayer cosplays for the love of doing it and for the characters they want to openly admire. Anything else is shenaniganz (to put it very mildly). Why weren't they up in arms over, say, your Midna cosplay? You were a completely impossible color. It's unbelieveable that you have to defend yourself over something that stems entirely from FICTION.
I just wanted to take a moment to say I enjoy your work and feel it portrays all the imagination and hard work you put into it. Don't let ignorance get to you; it will unfortunately always be there. Keep doing what you love, the rest of us can see how amazing it really is.
Thanks very much. The color I change to for katara is equivalent to a mild bronzer, and is a color I could easily reach, so I'm not sure how it's supposedly racist.
You're horrible. What you're doing is wrong. Go ahead and delete my comment and continue living in your little bubble of privilege. But you'll still be wrong.
